THE AFRICAN DIASPORA IN GOIÁS AND ITS SACRED SPACES

Abstract

The present article addresses the theme of the African diaspora in Goiás and the spatial dynamics of African-based religions, such as Candomblé and Jurema, in the metropolitan region of Goiânia. The aim of the study is to analyze the historical and cultural presence of Afro-descendants in Goiás, as well as to investigate Afro-Brazilian religious practices, exploring the dynamics of marginalization, segregation, and resistance within these communities. The methodology includes a literature review of works on the African diaspora and African-based religions, in addition to field observations conducted at a Jurema terreiro in Goiânia. The study also adopts a decolonial approach, seeking to deconstruct traditional historiographical narratives that have relegated Afro-descendant contributions to the background. The results show that Afro-Brazilian religions in the region, although facing stigmatization and social invisibility, function as spaces of resistance and identity reaffirmation. African-based religious practices, beyond their spiritual significance, also serve as mechanisms of cultural and political resistance against racism and historical segregation in Goiás. The conclusions point to the need for a historiographical revision that values the contributions of Afro-descendants and their religious practices, recognizing the central role of these populations in the historical formation of Goiás. The article highlights the urgency of an inclusive and decolonial approach to promote a more plural narrative that encompasses the various cultural and historical influences in the state.
